Best Disco Light for a Disco Dome

Being a bouncy castle man often means knowing something about quite a broad spectrum of subjects. Being a website amateur, managing a P&L, an amateur van mechanic, food hygiene... The list goes on. However, today we're a disco light expert!

We have a disco dome that has a built in disco light and speaker. It's pretty cool. It's one of the products we have that enables older children to still enjoy themselves on a "bouncy castle". By the time they're getting ready for secondary school they're just starting to get that bit older and "grow up". That can sometimes mean for some that they're too cool for a bouncy castle.

In truth, they would love a bouncy castle. The reality is that they're worried what their friends might think, especially if they're in their first year at secondary school and meeting new people. They don't want to be babyish.

The disco dome cuts all that nonsense out. By having it's own internal light system and speaker, it makes it much more acceptable for older children; They're allowed to have fun. The speaker allows them to connect their phone using wireless technology (bluetooth) so they can play their own music (much cooler than mum or dad choosing for them). The only thing they have to worry about is making sure they've got their playlist sorted!

It's a tricky age for children. They're starting to make their own decisions that can affect the rest of their life. It's a lot of pressure!

We have a responsibility to make sure that we are doing what we can to ensure what we offer is the best it can possibly be. That includes the lights inside the disco dome; Hence why today we're a disco light expert...

You can't just plonk any old disco light into a disco dome. It doesn't have rigging so the light needs to be stationary and non-moving. However, you want the lights to move around inside. There's very few options that can do this, but we narrowed it down to one product that while non-moving itself, inside it has a "stepper plate" that moves LED's around, causing the lights to throw around! It also has a crystal like dome shape covering it with a lot of "facets" so it refracts and casts off a lot of patterns!

That in itself doesn't make us a disco light expert, just a good shopper! However, experience has taught us that while it looks like there is one version of this type of crystal ball type disco light, there are actually dozens!

Some do not have a fan to reduce over-heating. If the disco dome is in use all day, it's important that the light doesn't overheat and burn itself out! Many of the models do not have a metal stepper plate, but instead a plastic one that over-heats and becomes stationary, making the lights stay still (kind of boring). We found some of the lights only have 3 LED lights, meaning there are not many light spots being thrown around and only three colours. We've also seen that some of these lights while claiming to have bright colours, only have 1 watt LED's, instead of 3 watt LED's; Three times the difference in brightness! This makes a big difference when the disco dome is in daylight; You really need those lights to shine!

There isn't really a massive difference in price between these lights. Sometimes they're actually cheaper than the inferior models. It's just about knowing which product is best and will give the best result. A rubbish disco light inside a disco dome can make the experience really under-whelming. It only takes a bit of research and some understanding of these light to make the party that little bit better; It's not even about the cost, it's about knowledge and experience.

Being a disco light expert is probably a stretch; We're only interested in them in relation to our dicso dome, but it's certainly someting we never thought we'd have to learn about to be a "bouncy castle man". We took some pictures below to illustrate the differences.
