For anyone that follows our blog or read our company info page, you'll know that we are a bouncy castle hire company. However, you'll also know that we are incredibly involved in the industry on several different levels, and we have a direct involvement int he creation of our own stock!
We thought it might be interesting for people to see the manufacturing process! Below is the first of a two part video on how the inflatables are made. It misses out the designing of the artwork (as producing artwork isn't specific to bouncy castle manufacturing) and jumps straight into themanufacturing part!
As you can see in the video above, the beginning of the process involves priniting the artwork onto specialist bouncy castle PVC.This assumes that the artwork is digitally printed and not hand-painted (which is a bit of a dying trade these days).
The specialist substrate cannot be printed on by most printers, and you need to use specialist inks for print adhesion to the PVC.
We have a very wide format printer for this which can print onto a roll up to 61 inches long. However, most bouncy castle material rolls are 150cm (59 inches) and 50 metres long. That makes for a very heavy roll of material, and you need a very special printer to handle not just the substrate, but the weight, too!
After the print is finished, it needs laminating. Some manufacturers do not laminate, but this regardless of any claims of superior techniques, the material does need laminating for several reasons and benefits from being flame retardent, resistant to UV (sunlight fading the artwork), scratch resistant and just more flexible and stronger. In short, it lasts longer and makes the print look better for longer!
The video above shows us using our laminator to strengthen the material. After the two stage process of printing and laminating the material is then ready for cutting and sewing into inflatables. We will try to get a video of this for part 2, and show the finished products, which will be our own very large range of themed inflatable ball pools to match our soft play!
